This summer, makeup takes its color cues from land- and seascapes (think: island greens, petal pinks and ocean blues), all infused with a healthy dose of shine. While sheen has typically been one of the least-desired traits when it comes to your complexion (no one wants an oil slick on overheated skin!), luminous makeup is another matter altogether. Healthy, radiant skin makes glossy hues stand out even more. So forget matte makeup for the rest of the summer; these multidimensional pigments reflect and absorb light to enhance and play up your best features. Get ready to dazzle!

Knockout nails

Set aside your pastels, and make nails sparkle with vibrant hues, which work well beachside, poolside--and all dressed up. But since bright colors show chips more than sheer shades, be diligent in removing polish when its time is up; there's no worse beauty faux pas than a chipped manicure or pedicure! And keep nails shaped to just past the ends of your fingertips to minimize chipping from day-to-day activities.

This season's hottest hues (from left) L'Oreal Jet-Set Shine Speed Dry Nail Enamel in Flash, a watermelon pink ($5.50; at drugstores); OPI Nail Lacquer in Greece Just Blue Me Away, an ocean blue ($7.50; opi.com); Orly Nail Lacquer in Emerald Life, a pastel green ($6.50; orlybeauty.com); Clinique Glosswear Nail Enamel in Sparkling Pink, a rosy hue ($9; clinique.com); Hard Candy Nail Polish in Hick, a deep blue ($9; hard candy.com); Mark, Set, Shine Rapid-Action Nail Color in Magentic, a bright pink ($4; meetmark.com); Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Nourishing Nail Color in Opal Truth, a summer wine ($4; at drugstores); Cover Girl Continuous Color Nails in Electric Blue, a neon blue ($3; at drugstores); Nicole by OPI Nail Lacquer in Pink About It!, a deep rose ($10; 800-341-9999); and Orly Nail Lacquer in Peridot Courage, a gold ($6.50; orlybeauty.com).

Electric eyes

When it comes to summer makeup, ocean-inspired blues and parrot pinks are fun and playful. But don't be timid; you can wear bright colors on your eyes this season. The newest formulas are sheer and contain less pigment, so the color will look lighter on your lids than it does in the makeup pan. But the truly daring can layer the shadows, mix with other shades or add a topcoat of eye gloss to up the intensity (M.A.C Gloss, $16.50, mac cosmetics.com, will do the trick). Many formulas also contain luminescent microparticles that catch the light, giving eyes a hint of shimmer and shine. For daytime, just use your finger or an eye-shadow brush to smooth on a single coat of shadow from lash line to crease. For evening, use the same shade as a liner to intensify the look: Dip a moistened liner brush into color, then apply close to lashes. Our favorite summer hues (at right, from top): Pop Beauty Eye Cake in Bright Pinks, four shades of pink (one shade shown) and a blue-gray ($19; sephora.com); Victoria's Secret Eye Shadow Mousse in Cream Shimmer, a pearly beige ($13; at Victoria's Secret stores); Maybelline New York Roller Color Loose Powder Eye Shadow in Roller Rink Pink, a sparkly pink ($6.50; at drugstores); Estee Lauder Pure Color Cool Eye Mousse in Cool Sky, a light blue ($20; esteelauder.com); and Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Tropicolor, a selection of four tropical hues (including lavender, shown; $6.50; at drugstores).

Luscious lips

When you want a high-shine, sexy look, glosses are the way to go--as opposed to heavier, matte, full-coverage lipsticks. Unlike most lipsticks, though, many glosses don't contain an SPF, so if you're headed outside, apply a clear, waxy balm underneath, like Aveda Lip Saver SPF 15, ($7.50; aveda.com.) The newest formulas contain moisturizing oils and ingredients like jojoba and vitamin E for ultimate lip hydration--why wearing them daily can help keep lips supersoft. But the best thing about supershiny glosses: The amplified light reflection helps create a three-dimensional effect that increases the appearance of volume, giving you instantly sexier lips. Plumper, poutier-looking lips can be yours in one swipe with this summer's top picks (at right, from top): Maybelline New York Wet Shine Diamonds Liquid in Plum Solitaire, a hot pink ($6.75; at drugstores); Cover Girl Wetslicks in Hot Tropic, a purply-pink ($5; at drugstores); Tarte Double-Ended Lipgloss in Johnny & Baby, an apricot shade on one end, a nectarine (shown) on the other ($19; sephora.com); Bourjois Effet 3D lip gloss in Rose Tectonic, an electric pink ($15; sephora.com); Neutrogena Shimmer Sheers in Charmed, a light pink ($9; at drugstores); and Almay Whipped Gloss in Candied Cider, a rose ($7; at drugstores).
