The makeup direction this summer: nearly naked and sun-kissed with a touch of color. As for hair, it's sexy, cool and uncomplicated. Makeup artist Vanessa Evelyn created these gorgeous faces, and stylists Neeko, Derrick Scurry and Keith Campbell offered do's with hot-weather practically.

1 DAY OR NIGHT, LET YOUR MAKEUP GLOW AND SKIN SHOW WITH LIGHTWEIGHT COVERAGE.

office hours

FACE TIME

* For a next-to-naked finish, use foundation sparingly (on forehead, nose and chin) and spot-treat for coverage where you need it (dark circles, acne scars). Blend well.

* A defined brow is a must. Evelyn opts for powders one shade lighter than brow color to fill in any hairless spots. One quick trick she loves is to dot hair gel on each brow, then brush upward, not sideways, to keep brows in place.

* Skip liner and shadow, but never mascara! Our pick: Lancome Flextencils Full Extension Curving Mascara in Black.

* To warm the lips, dab on a nude stain like MAC Glaze Lipstick in Gleam.

HAIR PLAY

* With the right length and layers, you can get a lot of look without a lot of work. Before blow-drying and styling, hair guru Neeko of the Sessions Studio in Pasadena, California, prepped these long layers with KeraCare Leave-In Conditioner.

* Apply KeraCare Dual Action Finishing Spritz on select sections before flat-ironing to separate and define pieces.

* To intensify separation, use a touch of pomade. Tweak your wisps with a flat iron or sculpt with the pomade as needed during the week.

* To maintain, sleep on a silk pillowcase at night, and avoid wrapping or you'll flatten the wisps.

2 after hours

FACE TIME

* To achieve this golden glow, brush a bronzing powder all over the face. We like Chanel Silky Bronzing Powder in Sierra.

* Cheeks are sculpted with the same hue and given a luminescent glow with a few dots of Make Up For Ever Metalizer #1 on the cheek- and brow bones.

* Define the eyes with a deep brown shadow like Lola Eyeshadow in Volcano. The finishing touch: a sweep of black eyeliner and two or three coats of mascara.

HAIR PLAY

* To create this gorgeous curly 'fro, Neeko started with soaking-wet hair and worked a healthy amount of Aveda Be Curly throughout to define curls and waves. He then went back through the hair with a small amount of styling gel for hold.

* Neeko dried the hair with a diffuser. Tip: It's best to bend over and dry hair while it's hanging down to ensure more uniform drying and to enhance body.

* Then he used a touch of KeraCare Conditioning Creme Hairdress on the ends and throughout the hair for shine.

3 weekend

FACE TIME

* On your carefree Saturdays, skip the foundation, but never forget the SPF. We like Body Bistro Avocado + Neem Protective Remedy for the face.

* Use a creamy cheek color for a softer, more natural-looking finish. Our summer picks include plums on darker complexions, and rosy or peachy hues on lighter complexions. To get this touch of color, try Sonia Kashuk Cheeker Sheer Stick in Sunkissed.

* Finish it all off with a clean nude gloss like Wet-n-Wild Megaflavors Gourmet Lip Gloss in Truffle.

HAIR PLAY

* Neeko pulled some strands away from the face, leaving a few longer layers to fall to the front. He then took three long strands on each side and pinned them individually to the back of the head.

4 DON'T SHY AWAY FROM WARM NEUTRALS IN SUMMER, THEY WORK BEAUTIFULLY IN ACHIEVING A BRONZY GLOW.

office hours

FACE TIME

* For a look that's pretty and radiant, mix highlighter with foundation. Try I-Iman Luminous #2 with your favorite liquid foundation.

* Warm the cheeks with Cargo 3-in-1 ColorTube in Summerside.

* To create the perfect sheer pout, Evelyn prefers a lip brush and gloss like Madina Milano Double Shine Gloss #2. (Remember to apply lip balm with an SPF first to protect your lips against the sun.)

HAIR PLAY

* Add some panache to your basic flip by framing the face with a few loose pieces. After pressing, stylist Derrick Scurry, derrickscurry.com, bent the ends with a flat iron. He then gave the model a pretty side part, tucking the longer strands behind the ears.

* To soften and add lift, he shaped two small sections near the ears with a flat iron.

5 after hours

FACE TIME

* A dramatic eye was created with deep brown powder over the top lids and below the lower lash, and a few swipes of mascara.

* Evelyn is a big believer in brow-lightening. "It can dramatically soften the face," she says. Her product pick: Jolen Creme Bleach. Want a warm brown one-night-only lift of color? Sweep on one coat of Revlon Lash Fantasy in Copper Fantasy.

* There are few things more seductive than a moist chocolate tip. For an ultraluscious kisser, Evelyn applied a touch of silver gloss. Try Black Opal Shimmer Lip Gloss in Chic with a dot of Lancome Star Gloss Brush-on Lip Shine in Starlight in the center.

HAIR PLAY

* Scurry relaxed the "weekend" ringlets (above) by running a flat iron through small sections of coils, transforming them into much softer waves.

* He mixed Paul Mitchell The Shine Spray and Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss to shape and luminize.

* To avoid tangling and to maintain waves, cover hair with a bonnet at night.

6 weekend

FACE TIME

* It's not about color but luminosity. Evelyn gave a sheer, healthy glow to the cheeks with a smear of plum gel blush like Stila Sport Color Push-Ups in Rouge Flash. She applied a pink gloss, MAC Lipglass in Lovechild, to complete the dewy look.

* Hot weather calls for a smudgeproof, waterproof product. Our pick: L'Oreal Waterproof Voluminous Mascara.

HAIR PLAY

* Scurry washed and blow-dried the model's natural hair, then wrapped individual pieces around a small-barrel curling iron to set coils.

* After shaping the spirals, he teased them with a comb for height and fullness.

* For moisture, try Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Daily Oil Cream Moisturizer. For radiance, try a few drops of Paul Mitchell The Shine Spray.

7 CLEAN MAKEUP DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN COLOR-FREE. THE KEY IS KEEPING IT SOFT AND SHEER.

office hours

FACE TIME

* Sea-greens and blues are hot for eyes this summer (yes, even for the workplace). Evelyn recommends using iridescent versions, which are more flattering on brown skin. She covered the lids here and shaded under the bottom lash line with Bare Escentuals i.d. bareMinerals Glimmer in Chameleon. She also lined the eyes with black pencil to add a bit of depth at the lash line.

* On cheeks, try Cargo 3-in-1 ColorTube in Santiago (a brownish rose); on the lips, Revlon Moisturous Lipcolor in Tawny Dew.

HAIR PLAY

* Stylist Keith Campbell of the C.O.I. Salon n Brooklyn added some edge to this basic bob by point-cutting the ends for texture.

* To keep the hair light and airy, he skipped the hair spray and oil sheen, using just a touch of Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade. It also keeps hair from frizzing and protects it, especially the ends, before flat-ironing.

8 after hours

FACE TIME

* Even in summer, you can play with deep sheers for a touch of drama. Warm the face with a plum stain on cheeks like II Makiage Studio Cream Color in Burgundy.

* For luminosity, Evelyn frosted the brow bone and cheekbones with Revlon All-Over Bronzing Powder.

* Complete the look with a neutral copper shadow on the upper lids and two coats of mascara.

HAIR PLAY

* Campbell gave this ultrasexy crop a bit of edge with a deep side part.

* After flipping the ends, he kept the look polished and neat by using a touch of MOP Pomade.

9 weekend

FACE TIME

* Add a bronzy finish, while you protect with Dr. Brandt Bronze Barrier Face SPF 30 in Deep.

* Top with a smear of clear lip gloss, like Borghese B Gloss Lip Gloss.

HAIR PLAY

* Campbell double-strand-twisted wet hair, using an alcohol-free gel to hold and smooth.

* He then created a faux bang with the twists, shaping them into an asymmetrical sweep.

* The remaining hair was knotted into a small chic chignon.
